Philosophy

Persephone's Daughters

Persephone's Daughters was formed by Cat Velasquez and Kara Kowert to explore fusing the ancient art of Raqs Sharqi ("Belly Dance") with other forms of dance and art including gypsy style, Flamenco, ballet, American Tribal style and gothic style.  Cat and Kara collaborate on all duet choreography and bring to the dance their own experiences and unique viewpoints.

Teaching

Their teaching philosophy also focuses on the individual dancer while at the same time celebrating collaboration and teamwork.  Dancers are urged to progress at their own pace.  Options to increase or decrease the level of complexity of a movement are frequently taught.  Classes usually begin in a circular formation which encourages interaction between the students.  Several students have formed friendships with their dance sisters that extend beyond the classroom.  Respect for oneself and others is the cornerstone of their methodology.
